Step 1. Investigate children's language background using the questionnaire
<aside>
In the test kit, there is a questionnaire that:
- Collects information about language and dialect experience and proficiency
- Determine if there is a need to assess children's Mandarin, English or both
- Decide which norm to use based on children's language backgrounds.

Recorded Prompts
- Recorded prompts of the standardized cueing hierarchy were embedded in the test. Clinicians can play the recordings to administer this standardized test. Even if you do not speak Mandarin, you can still use the test!
Test activity to make it more engaging
- The test incorporates a storyline where children are invited to play a game of finding hidden
'apples' throughout the test. This playful design keeps our little friends fully engaged, making the testing experience both enjoyable and effective!
Semi-automated system
- The Apple Mandarin Speech Test will be available on SpeechCatcher, a semi-automated system that helps clinicians administer the test, transcribe children's productions, as well as generate reports more efficiently.

SLPs can use the transcription support package to
- Know the difference between English and Mandarin
- Learn more about Mandarin phonology
- Transcribe Mandarin with the help of recordings from native speakers

Step 4. Speech data analysis
<aside>
Using the protocol to analyze children’s Mandarin speech production
- Sound inventory & Accuracy rate (single word & connected speech)
- Error patterns
- Phonological processes
- Consistency rate (single words; single word vs connected speech)
- Oral motor structure and function
- Checklist for clinical observation on voice, resonance, speech prosody, behavior concerns
Norm & Reference | Ongoing!
- We are collecting data from monolingual and bilingual children to establish norms for the test.
